Modern Christianity often speaks endlessly about worship while understanding very little about what worship actually is.

For many, worship has become a scheduled religious activity rather than a surrendered way of life. We attend services, sing songs, repeat familiar phrases, and then return to lives still centered almost entirely around ourselves. We call this worship because it is emotional, ceremonial, or traditional. But Scripture paints a far deeper and more uncomfortable picture.

True worship begins where self-importance ends.

At the center of the Biblical story is a continual tension between God and mankind: humanity’s refusal to truly submit to what God has said. From Eden until now, the human condition has remained remarkably consistent. We are naturally self-focused creatures. We see life largely through the reflection of ourselves—our wants, our wounds, our ambitions, our fears, our image.

Like Narcissus staring into the water, we become captivated by our own reflection and lose sight of everything beyond it.

That is why worship is so difficult.

Real worship requires the emptying of ourselves before something infinitely greater than ourselves. It is the recognition that God is not merely an accessory to our lives, but the very center and sustaining force of existence itself.

Yet modern worship can subtly become another form of self-preservation.

For many believers, church becomes a one-hour spiritual appointment tucked conveniently into a week of self-directed living. One hour out of 168 is offered to God as though He should be grateful for the allocation. We gather with people we barely know, smile politely, say the expected things, conceal our struggles, and present polished versions of ourselves.

We learn quickly how to appear spiritually healthy while quietly hiding spiritual emptiness.

Quick to smile. Slow to weep.
Celebrating our successes while burying our failures.
Protecting our image rather than exposing our hearts.

But eventually the performance becomes exhausting.

Because somewhere deep within us we know God cannot be worshipped through appearances alone.

Jesus said:

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
— John 4:24

Spirit and truth.

Not image and performance.
Not ritual and optics.
Not religious theater disguised as reverence.

The Scriptures repeatedly connect worship with sacrifice, surrender, humility, and obedience. Worship is not simply singing about God. Worship is yielding ourselves to Him.

Romans 12:1 describes believers as “living sacrifices.” That phrase alone dismantles much of modern religious thinking. Sacrifice is costly. It exposes. It transforms. It demands death to self.

And that process cannot possibly be confined to one building or one hour per week.

True worship happens in prayer closets, lonely walks, repentance, forgiveness, acts of mercy, private obedience, and moments where pride dies quietly before God. It happens when nobody is watching. It happens when we stop managing appearances and allow God to confront what is actually within us.

The church at its healthiest is not a gathering of polished people pretending strength. It is a gathering of redeemed people fully aware of their weakness and fully dependent upon God’s grace.

The most powerful spiritual moments in life are often the moments when self finally gets out of the way.

Those moments when we realize:
He is everything.
We are not.

Yesterday while walking through the Detroit Institute of Arts, I was struck by how much human art reflects this same tension.

Art reveals beauty, memory, aspiration, suffering, glory, ego, and longing. But art also reveals humanity’s tendency toward idolatry. We become fascinated not only with beauty itself, but with the elevation of human image and legacy. We memorialize faces, power, fame, sensuality, achievement, and personality until sometimes the image itself becomes an object of reverence.

Yet the physical image is rarely the deepest truth.

The visible always points toward something invisible.

Behind every painting, sculpture, cathedral, empire, or human accomplishment lies something deeper: belief, fear, pride, worship, longing, rebellion, hope, despair, transcendence.

The spiritual dimension is always driving the physical expression.

That is true in art.
It is true in culture.
And it is true in us.

We spend enormous energy shaping appearances while neglecting the invisible realities that actually define our lives. We alter clothing, language, branding, reputation, and outward behavior in hopes of controlling perception. Yet Scripture continually reminds us that God sees beyond all facades.

At the end of life, it will not be our appearances that define us, but the truth of who we became.

Which raises an uncomfortable question:

Who—or what—do we truly worship?

Because worship is not merely what we sing about on Sunday. Worship is whatever sits at the center of our attention, affection, sacrifice, identity, and obedience.

Some worship success.
Some worship comfort.
Some worship politics.
Some worship approval.
Some worship ideology.
Some even worship religion itself while barely knowing God.

But authentic Christianity calls us beyond all of these lesser things.

As the planets revolve around the sustaining force of the sun, humanity itself only finds meaning when centered around the Son of God. Christ is not merely an inspirational figure to admire from a distance. He is the living example of surrendered worship. His entire earthly life was submission to the Father’s will.

And that is the invitation before all of us.

To move beyond performance.
Beyond appearances.
Beyond ritual.
Beyond ourselves.

Worship is not escapism from reality.
It is surrender to ultimate reality.

The process never truly ends. It continues far outside church walls, beyond music, beyond liturgy, beyond public gatherings. Worship becomes a way of seeing, living, loving, repenting, and existing before God.

Perhaps the greatest obstacle to worship has never been atheism, secularism, or culture.

Perhaps the greatest obstacle has always been self.

And perhaps the first step toward truly knowing God is finally becoming small enough to see beyond our own reflection.

Faith, at its healthiest, is not built on feelings alone—nor on facts alone—but on the tension between the two.

Strip away the facts, and faith becomes pure emotion…unstable, subjective, and easily manipulated. In its worst form, it drifts into illusion—belief untethered from reality.

But strip away feeling, and faith becomes sterile. Cold. Intellectual. Something studied rather than lived.

The truth is, most people lean too far in one direction.

Some inherit their beliefs without ever questioning them. They identify as Christian, Jewish, Muslim—or even atheist—primarily because of family tradition or cultural environment. It’s safer that way. No friction. No disruption.

But unexamined belief is often just social programming wearing the mask of conviction.

On the other side are those who reduce faith entirely to emotion—spiritual highs, personal experiences, and internal impressions. These can feel powerful, even transformative…yet without grounding, they become unreliable guides.

So where does real faith live?

The Role of Experience and Revelation

Throughout history, spiritual experience has played a defining role in belief.

Call them revelations, visions, or dreams—these moments have shaped entire traditions. The Biblical narrative itself is filled with them. Without those experiences, much of what we call “faith” today wouldn’t even exist.

And yet, in modern culture, we’ve split into camps:

• One side tries to turn faith into a science—measurable, provable, explainable

• The other reduces it to feelings—personal truth, subjective meaning, emotional resonance

Both miss something essential.

Because life itself refuses to stay in one category.

A World of Cause and Effect… and Something More

We clearly live in a world governed by cause and effect.

Actions have consequences. Science explains much of what we observe. The physical world operates with consistency and structure.

But then there are the moments that don’t fit neatly into that framework.

Unexplainable healings. Sudden changes in direction. Internal transformations without clear external cause. Events people describe as miracles.

You can dismiss them—but they don’t go away.

Human experience is filled with both the explainable and the mysterious.

Which is why Scripture doesn’t push us toward one extreme or the other—it calls for discernment:

1 Thessalonians 5:21

Faith is not blind acceptance. It is tested. Examined. Refined.

Not everything we feel is true.
Not everything we hear is false.

The work is learning the difference.

Why People See the Same World Differently

Give one set of facts to a hundred people, and you’ll get a hundred interpretations.

That’s not a flaw in reality—it’s a reflection of human nature.

We all filter truth through:

• Past experiences

• Emotional states

• Belief systems

• Personal wounds or convictions

Some reject facts because they’re uncomfortable.

Others reject emotion because it feels unreliable.

Some deny real events altogether because accepting them would require change.

The result? The same reality produces radically different responses.

The Real Work of Faith

Faith isn’t about choosing between facts and feelings.

It’s about holding both—honestly.

It requires:

• The discipline to seek truth

• The humility to admit what we don’t understand

• The openness to experience something beyond ourselves

This is where faith becomes a journey, not a conclusion.

We study what can be known—history, science, scripture.

At the same time, we remain open to what cannot be fully explained—the movement of the spirit, the internal shift, the moment of clarity that defies logic.

And this tension isn’t a flaw—it’s the design.

John 4:24

Truth without spirit becomes lifeless religion.
Spirit without truth becomes unstable belief.

Real faith requires both.

Living Between Decay and Transformation

Physically, we are all moving in one direction.

Decay is inevitable. Time is undefeated.

But spiritually?

That’s where things open up.

We have a choice.

Will we grow—becoming more aware, more grounded, more aligned with something greater?

Or will we simply drift…accepting physical decline without ever asking deeper questions about meaning, purpose, or eternity?

This is where free will enters the picture.

We can’t control everything around us.

We can’t control what others believe or do.

But we can choose how we respond. What we pursue. What we remain open to.

Even that choice is influenced by what we’ve been exposed to—both physically and spiritually.

The Balance That Brings Life

A healthy life isn’t found in denying reality—or denying mystery.

It’s found in engaging both.

Facts ground us.
Feelings move us.

Truth requires both structure and experience.

And faith—real, durable, meaningful faith—lives right in the middle of that tension.

So the question isn’t whether you lean toward facts or feelings.

The question is whether you’re willing to pursue both…honestly.

To test what you believe.
To experience what you cannot explain.
To remain grounded without becoming closed…
and open without becoming lost.

Because in the end, faith is not the rejection of reason…

It’s the expansion of it.

Closing Thought

At the center of it all is a simple but demanding truth:

“God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Not one or the other. Both.

The mind engaged.
The spirit alive.

Facts that ground us…
and a faith that moves us.

My pastor recently began a four-week sermon series on the person of the Holy Spirit. What struck me wasn’t just the teaching—it was the reaction.

Longtime members—some in the church for over 50 years—said they had never heard a sermon focused specifically on the Holy Spirit.

How can that be?

How can an entire dimension of God’s nature be so overlooked?

The Missing Center of the Gospel

To deny the person and power of the Holy Spirit is not a minor theological gap—it is a fundamental disconnect from the Gospel itself.

Without the Holy Spirit:

• There is no redemption

• There is no renewal

• There is no transformation

Jesus Himself made this unmistakably clear:

“Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5)

Salvation is not intellectual agreement. It is spiritual rebirth.

The apostle Paul reinforces this:

“No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:3)

Faith is not learned—it is revealed.

The Only Unpardonable Sin

Jesus Christ gave a sobering warning:

“Every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.” (Matthew 12:31)

This is not a careless statement or a moment of doubt.

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is:

A hardened, willful, ongoing rejection of the Holy Spirit’s truth—especially when that truth is clearly recognized.

In context, religious leaders witnessed the power of God and deliberately called it evil (Matthew 12:24).

This is not ignorance. It is informed resistance.

Why Is It “Unforgivable”?

Not because God refuses to forgive.

But because the person has cut themselves off from the only means through which forgiveness comes.

Jesus said the Spirit would:

“Convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.” (John 16:8)

If you reject the One who convicts…
If you resist the One who calls you to repentance…

You close yourself off from grace.

It is like refusing the only cure—and then wondering why healing never comes.

A Critical Distinction Most People Miss

If you are worried that you may have committed this sin—you haven’t.

Why?

Because conviction is evidence of life.

The Spirit is still working.

The people Jesus warned were not anxious—they were hardened and confident in their rejection.

Scripture describes this condition clearly:

“Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Hebrews 3:15)

The Holy Spirit Is Not Optional

This is where modern Christianity gets uncomfortable—but clarity matters.

“Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him.” (Romans 8:9)

If you do not know the Holy Spirit, you do not truly know God.

You may recognize the gifts of the Spirit—but if the fruit is absent, the power is absent.

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” (Galatians 5:22–23)

These are not personality traits.

They are evidence of God’s presence within a person.

Activity Is Not the Same as Transformation

There is a sobering warning here.

You can:

• Attend church

• Speak religious language

• Even operate in outward expressions of faith

…and still miss the transforming presence of the Holy Spirit.

Paul puts it bluntly:

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.” (1 Corinthians 13:1)

Without the Spirit’s transforming work, faith becomes noise.

The Role of the Holy Spirit in Salvation

Salvation is not a transaction of ideas—it is a regeneration of life.

“He saved us…by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.” (Titus 3:5)

No Spirit—no new life.
No Spirit—no true faith.
No Spirit—no reconciliation with God.

This is not an advanced doctrine.

It is the foundation.

A Call Back to the Center

The modern church often emphasizes structure, knowledge, and outward expression.

But without the Holy Spirit, all of it becomes form without substance.

Jesus said:

“The wind blows where it wishes…so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8)

You cannot control the Spirit.

But you can respond to Him.

Seek Him.
Ask for Him.
Yield to Him.

Because in the end, Christianity without the Holy Spirit is not Christianity at all.

It is just religion.

And religion has never saved anyone.

In an age where secularism tends to overcomplicate faith, and religion often oversimplifies it, the truth lies somewhere in between.

Those without faith often view God as mystical—too abstract or supernatural to be taken seriously. Immersed in a purely natural worldview, they struggle to accept a reality shaped by a spiritual cause. To them, faith feels like a leap beyond reason.

Yet those who believe in God can fall into a different error—underestimating the depth and complexity of truly knowing Him. While Christians affirm that God has revealed Himself through Scripture, understanding that revelation in its fullness is no simple task. The Bible is not shallow; it is layered, historical, and deeply interconnected.

At its core, the Gospel is simple.

Faith begins with believing that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, entered history to redeem mankind from sin. Born of a virgin, He lived, taught, suffered, was crucified, and rose again. After appearing to many witnesses, He ascended to heaven, promising to return. This message—clear, direct, and accessible—is the foundation of Christian faith.

But while belief may be simple, following Christ is not.

To walk as Jesus walked is where complexity begins. Faith is not merely acknowledgment—it is transformation. The call of Christ is not only to receive forgiveness, but to live in obedience. The cause of faith produces the effect of a changed life.

And that life is not easy.

Scripture makes it clear that the Christian life involves struggle. Though we are renewed by the Spirit, we still live in a fallen world. There is an ongoing tension between flesh and spirit—a daily battle where, as Jesus said, “the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” This is not theoretical; it is deeply personal and often difficult.

The conflict is not just internal—it is spiritual.

The Bible speaks of forces beyond what we see: principalities, powers, and spiritual opposition. The weapons we are given are not physical, but spiritual—truth, faith, discipline, obedience, and the transforming work of the Holy Spirit. These are not tools we master instantly; they are developed through practice, submission, and growth.

This is where faith becomes demanding.

A life in Christ leads to self-sacrifice, humility, and a reordering of priorities. We begin to live differently—not out of pride, but out of devotion. As we are filled with His Spirit, our dependence on the approval and validation of others begins to fade. Our identity shifts from the world’s standards to God’s calling.

We are no longer living for ourselves, but for Him—and for the mission He has given us.

In the end, the Gospel is simple, but the life it produces is anything but.

We are invited into a reality that is both profound and challenging—a spiritual journey that requires wisdom, endurance, and continual growth. God has not hidden the path from us, but neither has He reduced it to something shallow.

So we are called to both simplicity and depth:
to believe with clarity,
to live with conviction,
and to grow in understanding.

Faith may begin in a moment—but it unfolds over a lifetime.

There is a constant noise in our world—countless voices offering different versions of what it means to be a “Christian.”

What must a person actually believe to be saved?
What does it mean to truly follow Christ?
And where is all of this ultimately leading?

At its core, the Christian faith answers these questions with a radical claim: it is about a complete transformation—of who we are, why we exist, and where we are going.

Yet many reduce Christianity to rituals, moral effort, or simply waiting to die and go to heaven. Scripture presents something far deeper—and far more demanding.

1. Purpose: To Know God and Reflect Him

The central purpose of the Christian life is relationship—to know God, love Him, and reflect His character.

Jesus said:

“You shall love the Lord your God… and your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37–40).

From the beginning, humanity was created “in the image of God” (Genesis 1:27)—designed to reflect His nature: truth, justice, mercy, creativity, and authority.

Christianity, then, is not passive belief. It is transformation.

“Whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked” (1 John 2:6).

This means becoming the kind of person who actually lives like Christ—at home, at work, in conflict, and in decision-making.

A business owner who chooses integrity over profit, refusing to cut ethical corners—even when it costs him financially—is reflecting the character of God more than someone who simply claims belief.

2. Process: Transformation, Not Just Forgiveness

Many stop at forgiveness. But forgiveness is only the beginning.

• Forgiveness is the entry point

• Transformation is the journey

• Christlikeness is the goal

Scripture is direct about this process:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).

“Put off your old self… and put on the new self” (Ephesians 4:22–24).

This transformation touches everything:

• How you think

• What you desire

• How you respond under pressure

• What you prioritize in life

Someone who once lived with uncontrolled anger but gradually becomes patient, measured, and self-controlled is not just “religious”—they are being transformed.

This is not behavior management. It is inner renewal.

3. Destiny: Restoration and Participation in God’s Kingdom

The Christian hope is often reduced to “going to heaven.” But the biblical vision is far greater.

It includes:

• Resurrection

“The dead will be raised imperishable” (1 Corinthians 15:52)

• A renewed creation

“Behold, I am making all things new” (Revelation 21:5)

• Active participation in God’s kingdom

“If we endure, we will also reign with Him” (2 Timothy 2:12)

Christians are described as heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17).

This is not passive existence—it is restored responsibility.

Just as a broken system is not abandoned but rebuilt, Scripture presents God not as discarding creation—but restoring it, and inviting His people to participate in its renewal.

4. The Bottom Line

Strip away the confusion, and the message is clear:

The purpose of the Christian is to become like Christ and participate in what God is doing—now and forever.

And the destiny?

Full restoration—of the person, of relationships, and of creation itself—under the rule of God.

Where It Often Goes Wrong

Modern Christianity often drifts into one of three distortions:

• Too shallow: “Just believe and go to heaven”

• Too moralistic: “Just be a good person”

• Too mystical: “Just feel something spiritual”

Jesus cuts through all three:

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24).

That is not shallow, moralistic, or emotional—it is total.

Final Thought

Christianity is not about escaping the world.
It is about being transformed within it—and ultimately seeing it restored.

“We… are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

That process begins now—and reaches its fullness in what is to come.

A pastor friend of mine was recently honored to participate in the online event “America Reads the Bible.” By what might be called the “luck of the draw,” he was assigned 1 Chronicles 2–4—chapters filled with genealogies of Israel’s kings and leaders. As many know, these passages can feel difficult and, at times, dry, especially with Hebrew names that challenge English pronunciation.

Yet even in these sections—often overlooked—there is a powerful story unfolding: the long, complex history of God’s relationship with His chosen people, Israel. And one striking reality emerges clearly:

Very few of Israel’s leaders were truly faithful to God.

Out of 39 kings spanning the divided kingdoms of Israel and Judah, 33 were described as having “done evil in the sight of the Lord.”

That’s not a small anomaly—that’s a pattern.

It forces an uncomfortable but necessary question:
Why have so few leaders—throughout biblical history and even in so-called Judeo-Christian nations—been truly godly?

God’s Sovereignty—and Man’s Will

Scripture makes clear that God establishes nations and appoints leaders. Yet He also created humanity with free will. We are not robots—we are decision-makers.

From the beginning, mankind chose rebellion. Adam and Eve failed the first test, and sin entered the world. Since then, human history has largely been shaped by that fallen nature. For thousands of years, corruption, pride, and self-rule have dominated human leadership.

In that light, it’s almost miraculous that any good remains at all.

But it does—because God has not abandoned His creation. He continues to reveal Himself, preserve His promises, and move history toward redemption through Jesus Christ.

Even the “Greats” Failed

One of the most humbling truths in Scripture is this:
Even the most revered figures of the faith were deeply flawed.

• Abraham, the father of faith, lied out of fear and doubted God’s promise, leading to the birth of Ishmael through human effort rather than divine trust.

• Noah, after witnessing God’s judgment on the world, fell into sin soon after the flood.

• Samuel, a great prophet and judge, could not guide his own sons in righteousness.

• David, a man after God’s own heart, committed adultery and murder—and his family followed destructive paths.

These are not minor missteps. These are sobering reminders.

No leader is consistently “good.” No human is beyond failure.

The Danger of Trusting Men

This is where many people go wrong.

We look to leaders—spiritual or political—for stability, righteousness, and guidance. But Scripture repeatedly shows us that no man is worthy of ultimate trust.

The human heart is fallen. It needs mercy. It needs grace. And not everyone seeks or receives it.

This is why Scripture consistently redirects our focus:
Do not place your hope in men—place it in God.

Why Does God Allow It?

God allows leaders to rise and fall, even in corruption, for reasons we may not fully understand. But Scripture suggests this:

• To demonstrate the consequences of sin

• To reveal the contrast between good and evil

• To show humanity its need for redemption

God intervenes when necessary to fulfill His purposes—but often, He allows people to follow the path they choose.

And that path, left unchecked, leads to darkness.

The Only Real Solution

This brings us to the core truth of the Gospel:

We cannot make ourselves righteous.

No system, no leader, no effort of human will can fix the condition of the human heart. That is why God made a way—through Jesus Christ.

“By grace you have been saved… not by works.”
“Without faith it is impossible to please God.”

We are not saved by performance. We are saved by grace, through faith.

A Call to Humility and Dependence

The lesson of Israel’s kings is not just historical—it’s personal.

We are no different.

We are just as capable of pride, self-deception, and failure. But we are also offered something extraordinary:

• Grace instead of judgment

• Forgiveness instead of condemnation

• Guidance through the Holy Spirit

Victory is not found in perfection—it is found in surrender to Godly behavior.

Final Thought

If there is one takeaway from the long line of flawed kings, it is this:

Stop trying to be your own ruler.
Stop putting other people on thrones they cannot sustain.

There is only one King who is faithful, righteous, and worthy.

Come as a child.
Lay down your pride.
Turn away from self-rule.

Let Jesus be King.

That is the only path that leads away from being “evil in the sight of the Lord”…
and toward a life marked by grace, truth, and redemption.

We’ve established two things:

• God made a real covenant with Israel

• That covenant is fulfilled in Christ and expanded through the Church

So now we face the harder question—one most Christians either oversimplify or avoid:

What role do nations and governments still play in the plan of God?

Because we don’t live in Abraham’s world.

We live in a world of borders, elections, policies, and power.

And most Christians drift into one of two errors:

• Over-spiritualizing everything (as if governments don’t matter)

• Over-politicizing everything (as if governments are everything)

Scripture allows neither.

God Doesn’t Ignore Governments—He Establishes Them

The Bible is direct about this:

“The Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.”
— Daniel 4:17

And again:

“There is no authority except that which God has established.”
— Romans 13:1

That gives us a clear starting point:

• Governments are real

• Authority is real

• Power is not random

It is allowed, positioned, and ultimately governed by God.

God Uses Nations—Even Imperfect Ones

This is where the discussion gets uncomfortable.

God does not only work through righteous nations.

He works through all of them.

• Babylon judged Israel

• Persia restored it

• Rome ruled during the time of Christ

Even rulers who did not know Him were part of His plan.

Scripture makes this explicit:

“[God] made from one man every nation… and determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands…”
— Acts 17:26

History is not random.

Nations are not accidents.

There is a governing hand behind it all.

So Where Does Modern Israel Fit?

Let’s stay precise.

If:

• God’s covenant with Israel remains

• The Church has been brought into that covenant through Christ

• And God establishes nations and authority

Then this follows:

The modern state of Israel exists within the sovereign purposes of God.

That does not mean:

• Every policy is righteous

• Every decision is approved

• Every leader is faithful

But it does mean:

• Its existence is not accidental

• Its role is not insignificant

• Its government is not outside God’s control

Apply the Same Standard to Every Nation

Consistency matters.

What is true of Israel is true of every nation:

• The United States

• Europe

• Every government on earth

God:

• Raises nations

• Positions them

• Uses them

• And judges them

“He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others.”

No nation gets a free pass.

Not Israel.
Not America.
Not anyone.

But Here’s Where Most People Get It Wrong

At this point, many people swing too far.

If God governs nations, they assume:

• Nations are the main focus

• Politics is the primary battlefield

• Governments are where real change happens

That’s not how Scripture frames it.

Because while God governs nations—

He redeems people.

Nations Are the Stage—People Are the Mission

Scripture holds both truths together:

“[God] made from one man every nation…”
— Acts 17:26

But it immediately tells us why:

“…so that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him…”
— Acts 17:27

That’s the purpose.

Nations are not the end goal.

They are the environment in which God is drawing people to Himself.

You Don’t Transform a Nation Directly

We think in national terms:

• Fix the system

• Elect better leaders

• Restore the country

But Scripture brings it back to something far more direct:

“If my people, who are called by my name…”
— 2 Chronicles 7:14

Not “if their government changes.”

If my people…

Because every nation—strong or broken—is made up of individuals.

And individuals are accountable to God.

The Church Transcends Every Border

Empires rise.

Governments fall.

Nations shift.

But the Church remains:

A people drawn from every nation—yet belonging fully to none.

“There is neither Jew nor Gentile… for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
— Galatians 3:28

The Church is not defined by geography.

It is defined by allegiance.

No Nation Gets a Free Pass

This brings needed clarity:

• The United States is not a “Christian nation” in the redemptive sense

• The modern state of Israel is not above accountability

• No government represents God perfectly

God does not align Himself with:

• Parties

• Platforms

• National identities

He aligns with truth—and with those who belong to Him.

The Line That Holds It All Together

Here is the tension Scripture forces us to hold:

God governs nations.
But He redeems people.

Ignore nations—and you become naive.

Elevate nations—and you become political.

Scripture allows neither.

Final Closing

God’s plan was never limited to one nation.

But it was never disconnected from nations either.

From Abraham…
to Israel…
to Christ…
to the Church…
to the world—

God has been working through people, governments, and history to accomplish His purposes.

And the question is no longer just:

“Do we support Israel?”

The real question is:

Do we understand what God is doing—and are we aligned with it?

Because Scripture was never meant to fit neatly into our political categories—

It was meant to reshape how we see:

• Nations

• Authority

• And ultimately, God Himself

Here’s the question most Christians never answer clearly:

If God made His covenant with Israel… where does the Church fit?

You’ll usually hear one of two answers:

• “The Church replaced Israel.”

• “The Church has nothing to do with Israel.”

Both are simple.
Both are clean.

And both collapse under Scripture.

Because the real answer is not simpler—it’s deeper.

The False Choice That Confuses Everything

For generations, Christians have been pushed into a false binary:

• Israel or the Church

• Covenant or Gospel

• Old Testament or New Testament

But Scripture never presents those as competing systems.

It presents one unfolding plan—moving with precision through history.

“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ.”
— 2 Corinthians 1:20

God’s promises don’t divide.

They converge.

Go Back to the Meaning—Not Just the Moment

Most confusion doesn’t come from Genesis itself.

It comes from stopping there.

The New Testament doesn’t reinterpret the promise—it reveals what it always meant:

“Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham.”
— Galatians 3:7

And then even more directly:

“Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham…”
— Galatians 3:8

That’s a staggering statement.

It means the promise to Abraham was never just about:

• Land

• Ethnicity

• Or national identity

It was about justification by faith—extended to the nations.

So the real issue isn’t misunderstanding Genesis.

It’s failing to read Genesis through the lens Scripture itself provides.

Christ Is the Fulfillment

The covenant does not end with Israel.

It narrows—to Christ.

“The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed… meaning one person, who is Christ.”
— Galatians 3:16

Everything converges there.

And then, through Christ, it expands again:

“If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
— Galatians 3:29

That is the structure:

Promise → Christ → Inclusion

Not replacement.
Not separation.

Fulfillment.

The Olive Tree (The Structure You Can’t Ignore)

If you miss this, you’ll misread the entire relationship between Israel and the Church.

“You, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in…”
— Romans 11:17

Paul’s picture is deliberate:

• One root

• One tree

• Multiple branches

Gentiles are not planted separately.

They are grafted in.

And then comes the warning:

“Do not consider yourself superior to those other branches…”
— Romans 11:18

That eliminates arrogance—and forces humility.

Let’s Say It Clearly

The Church does not replace Israel.
The Church is grafted into what began with Israel.

And Scripture is not vague about this:

“Did God reject His people? By no means!”
— Romans 11:1

God’s covenant did not fail.
It was not canceled.
And it has not been transferred.

It is being fulfilled—and expanded—through Christ.

One New Humanity

There’s one final piece that brings this together:

“He himself is our peace… and has made the two groups one… creating in himself one new humanity…”
— Ephesians 2:14–15

Not two parallel peoples.

Not competing identities.

One new humanity—formed in Christ.

• Jew and Gentile

• Brought together

• Under one fulfilled promise

So Where Does the Church Fit?

Here is the answer, without hedging:

The Church is the global expansion of the Abrahamic covenant through Christ.

That means:

• What began with Abraham now includes the nations

• What was rooted in Israel now reaches the world

• What was promised is now being fulfilled

The Line That Holds It Together

Israel is the root.
Christ is the fulfillment.
The Church is the expansion.

Miss any part of that—and the whole structure breaks.

Closing

The promise to Abraham didn’t stay confined to one people.

It didn’t stall in history.

It moved—deliberately—toward Christ
and through Christ—outward to the world.

What began as a covenant with one man
has become an invitation to every nation.

Not by replacing Israel.

But by fulfilling what Israel was chosen to carry.

Because Scripture is clear:

God is not finished with them either.

(As I have been studying and developing this blog, I have decided it can’t be covered in a normal single post blog. So, I will break this up into three parts for easier understanding and hopefully not lose any of you via length or confusion. Hope you will find this worth coming back for in the next couple of days)

In Genesis, God made a covenant with Abraham that is still in motion today. Unfortunately, modern dispensationalism within the Christian church is in the process of re-interpreting or dismantling the essence of that covenant.

Few Bible verses are quoted more confidently—and understood more poorly—than this:

“I will bless those who bless you…”
— Genesis 12:3

You’ve heard it before. Maybe you’ve even said it.

It’s often used to justify a simple idea:

Support Israel → God will bless you.

Clean. Easy. Memorable.

And incomplete.

Because if that’s all this verse means, then we’ve reduced a foundational covenant of Scripture into a political slogan.

And God doesn’t deal in slogans.

The Problem With “Easy” Interpretations

Modern Christianity loves formulas:

• Do this → get blessed

• Say this → unlock favor

• Support this → secure God’s approval

But the Bible consistently resists that kind of simplification.

Genesis 12:3 is not a transactional promise.
It is a covenant declaration.

And if you treat it like a formula, you will misunderstand both Israel and God Himself.

A Covenant, Not a Catchphrase

To understand this verse, you have to go back to what’s actually happening.

In Genesis 12, God is not making a casual statement. He is establishing a covenant with Abraham that includes:

• A people (Israel)

• A promise (blessing and land)

• A purpose (to reach the world)

This is the starting point of the entire biblical story.

And it is not temporary.

“The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”
— Romans 11:29

That means something most people are hesitant to say clearly:

God is not finished with Israel.

Not historically. Not theologically. Not prophetically.

The Part Everyone Skips

Here’s the line that rarely gets equal attention:

“All peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
— Genesis 12:3

That changes everything.

Because it tells you the covenant was never meant to stop with Israel.

It was meant to flow through Israel.

From the very beginning, the plan was global.

Israel was chosen—but not as the final destination.

It was chosen as the vehicle.

Where Modern Teaching Goes Off Track

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

A lot of modern teaching turns Genesis 12:3 into this:

“If we support Israel politically, God will bless our nation financially.”

That idea is everywhere.

It’s preached. It’s implied. It’s rarely questioned.

But it doesn’t hold up under Scripture.

The Bible never promises:

• Automatic economic blessing for political alignment

• Protection from judgment for any nation

• Or unconditional approval of any government

In fact, Scripture shows the opposite.

God repeatedly judges Israel itself when it turns away from Him.

Let that sink in.

The same nation tied to the covenant was also held accountable under it.

So why would anyone assume that simply aligning with Israel—without aligning with God—guarantees blessing?

It doesn’t.

This Is Bigger Than Politics

This is where the conversation needs to mature.

Genesis 12:3 is not about:

• Modern foreign policy

• Partisan loyalty

• Or geopolitical strategy

Those may intersect with it—but they are not the core of it.

At its core, this verse is about how God works through history:

• He chooses a people

• He makes a promise

• He carries that promise forward

• And He uses it to reach the world

That is a theological framework—not a political talking point.

So What Does It Actually Mean to “Bless Israel”?

If we strip away the slogans and get back to Scripture, “blessing Israel” looks more like this:

• Recognizing that God chose Israel for a purpose

• Honoring the role Israel plays in redemptive history

• Rejecting anti-Semitism in all its forms

• Understanding that God’s promises are still in motion

But it also means something deeper:

Aligning yourself with the God who made the covenant in the first place.

Because you cannot claim the promise while ignoring the One who made it.

The Line Most People Won’t Say

Here it is, plain and simple:

You can support Israel politically and still miss the point spiritually.

And you can misunderstand Genesis 12:3 while quoting it perfectly.

That’s the danger.

If we’re going to talk about “blessing Israel,” we need to move beyond surface-level thinking.

Back to covenant.
Back to Scripture.
Back to what God is actually doing.

Because what began with Abraham was never small.

And it was never meant to be reduced to a slogan.

What Is the NAR?

The New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) is not a denomination—it’s a movement.

It claims that God is restoring modern-day apostles and prophets to govern the Church with fresh authority and ongoing revelation.

The term itself was popularized by C. Peter Wagner, but the ideas have spread far beyond any single label.

At its core, the NAR shifts authority:

• From Scripture → to impressions

• From doctrine → to experience

• From Christ → to personalities

That’s not a small adjustment. That’s a different foundation.

The Leaders and the Platform

The movement is driven by influential networks and personalities:

• Bill Johnson

• Mike Bickle

• Cindy Jacobs

• Che Ahn

• Sean Feucht

• Paula White-Cain (President Trump’s “Spiritual advisor”)

Some reject the label “NAR,” but the theology is recognizable:

• Ongoing prophecy as normative

• Apostolic authority as current

• Revival as something to activate

The result? A Church increasingly shaped by voices, not the Word.

“I Feel… I Sense… God Told Me…”

This is where things break.

Subjective language replaces objective truth:

• “I feel…”

• “I sense…”

• “God told me…”

None of that is automatically false. But it becomes dangerous when it becomes final.

Scripture doesn’t say “trust your impressions.” It says:

“Test the spirits…” (1 John 4:1)

When personal revelation outranks Scripture, you don’t have Christianity anymore—you have spiritualized self-expression.

Worship or Performance?

Let’s be honest.

A lot of what passes for worship today looks more like a concert than reverence.

• Lights

• Atmosphere

• Emotional build

• The right moment

And front and center?

The worship leader.

The danger isn’t volume—it’s focus.

When worship becomes a platform for visibility, it stops being about God and starts being about us performing devotion.

Zeal Without Substance

There is real passion in these spaces. No question.

But passion is not proof of truth.

You see:

• High energy, low doctrine

• Emotional intensity, shallow understanding

• Soft hearts—and soft thinking

The Holy Spirit is not opposed to the mind. He is called:

“The Spirit of truth” (John 16:13)

If your faith cannot withstand scrutiny, it will collapse under pressure.

The “New Apostles” Problem

This is where it gets serious.

Modern “apostles” are being elevated with:

• Authority that isn’t accountable

• Revelation that isn’t testable

• Platforms that aren’t questioned

And often:

• Influence that is heavily monetized

Let’s be clear—this is not how the early Church functioned.

The Apostles were:

• Eyewitnesses of Christ

• Authors of Scripture

• Foundations of the Church (Ephesians 2:20)

You don’t recreate that office. You build on it.

When leaders position themselves beyond critique, that’s not spiritual authority—that’s spiritual insulation.

You Can’t Manufacture Revival

This may be the biggest illusion.

Revival is talked about, declared, branded—even scheduled.

But Scripture never presents revival as something we initiate.

It is something God brings.

“If my people… humble themselves…” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Real revival is not:

• Loud

• Marketed

• Engineered

It is:

• Humbling

• Convicting

• Transforming

You don’t hype revival.
You repent your way toward it.

What Real Revival Produces

When revival is real, it doesn’t produce spectacle.

It produces:

• Conviction of sin (Acts 2:37)

• Repentance (Luke 3:8)

• Obedience

• Depth

Not just crowds—but disciples.

Not just moments—but transformation.

Anything less may be movement—but it isn’t revival.

Final Word

This isn’t about personalities. It’s about truth.

The Church is not lacking:

• Energy

• Creativity

• Expression

It is lacking:

• Discernment

• Depth

• Biblical authority

Sincerity is not the measure of truth.

Scripture is.

And if the Church trades that for experience, platform, or personality—

it won’t lead to revival.

It will lead to confusion and delusion.

Make sure you are participating in a Biblical church…not one of passing fancy or pure emotion. One of REAL relationship. One based on God’s Word, not the words of men.

Secular people will not understand this, but I hope to shed some meaning on what prayer is…and isn’t…from a Biblical view.

It’s striking how much language about prayer fills our culture.

Scroll through social media and you’ll see it everywhere—prayer apps, “sending prayers,” “RIP,” “rest in peace,” and “prayers for the family.”

I don’t take issue with the sentiment. In many cases, it’s sincere and compassionate. But it does raise a deeper question:

Do we actually understand what we mean when we say we are praying?

If we are speaking of Christian prayer—prayer to the one true God revealed in Scripture—then we have to let the Bible define what prayer is, not culture. And Scripture is clear: God does not respond to prayer in a casual or universal way. He tells us both what He hears… and what He does not.

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” — 2 Chronicles 7:14

That verse alone corrects much of our modern assumption.

Prayer Begins with Humility

First, He hears “MY people who are called by my name”. In other words, you have to know Him as He has revealed Himself in order to talk to Him.

If you know Him, you realize that prayer is not a demand line to God.

It is not presenting our will for His approval. It is the surrender of our will to His.

God hears the humble—not the proud, not the self-assured, not those who approach Him as if He exists to serve them.

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” — James 4:6

Before anything else, prayer begins with a right posture: humility before a holy God.

Prayer Requires Repentance

Notice the sequence in 2 Chronicles:
humble → pray → seek → turn from wicked ways

That turning is repentance.

Without repentance, prayer becomes empty words. Scripture is blunt about this:

“If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” — Psalms 66:18

“Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God.” — Isaiah 59:2

That’s not popular, but it is clear.

God is not obligated to hear the prayers of those who reject Him while continuing in rebellion. The only prayer He promises to hear from that position is the prayer of repentance.

Relationship Determines Access

We live in a culture that assumes God is always listening equally to everyone or that
”any god” will do.

Scripture paints a different picture.

Yes, God is omniscient—He hears everything. But relationally, He responds differently to those who belong to Him and He shares His power and glory with no other “god”.

Jesus Himself made this explicit:

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” — John 14:6

Access to God is not generic—it is mediated through Christ.

That means prayer is not just about speaking words upward. It is about being rightly related to God through Jesus.

The Prodigal Pattern

Most of us have been or are “prodigal sons” at one time or another. Do you remember the quiet emptiness and solitary existence you felt then? I do.

In Luke 15, the son was still a son—but he was out of fellowship. There was distance. There was separation.

What changed?

“He came to himself…” (Luke 15:17)

Then he returned.

Then the father ran to him.

Then restoration happened.

That is the pattern of prayer:
awakening → repentance → return → restoration

Not entitlement. Not assumption.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is not a passive listener to all humanity equally.

He indwells believers—those who have been brought into relationship with God through Christ (see Romans 8:9).

He convicts the world of sin (John 16:8), but He dwells within and intercedes for those who belong to God:

“The Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” — Romans 8:26

So even our ability to pray rightly is not self-generated—it is Spirit-enabled.

A Coming Reality

There is coming a day when all prayers will be unanimous, but not heard equally.

“Every knee shall bow… and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” — Philippians 2:10–11

When Jesus returns to this earth as He has promised so clearly, recognition will be universal.

But Scripture also warns that for many, that moment will not be salvation—but judgment. The time for repentance is now, not then. It will be too late…and nobody is waiting in purgatory before they know if they have relationship with God through Christ.

So What Is Prayer, Really?

Prayer is not a vague spiritual gesture.

It is:

• Humble approach

• Repentant heart

• Right relationship through Christ

• Spirit-enabled communication

• Alignment with God’s will—not ours

The Question That Matters

So when we say, “I’m praying,” or “prayers for you,” we should pause and ask:

Who am I praying to?
On what basis do I approach Him?
And do I actually have a relationship with Him?

Because in the end, prayer is not about saying words.

It is about knowing God—and being known by Him (see Galatians 4:9).

“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.” — Hebrews 11:1

JOY…Is it just an emotion—something that rises and falls with circumstances? Is it dependent on things going well, on progress, on comfort, on outcomes we can see and measure? If that’s true, then joy is fragile. It disappears the moment life turns.

But Scripture presents something far more durable.

It asks a harder question:
How do we have joy in suffering?
How do we have joy in incompletion—when we are not who we should be?
How do we have joy even in the presence of our own sin?

That kind of joy cannot come from circumstances. It has to come from somewhere deeper.

C. S. Lewis wrote extensively about joy—not as shallow happiness, but as something rooted in longing and ultimately fulfilled in God. He was no stranger to grief. He buried his wife. He wrestled honestly with loss. And yet, even there, he pointed toward a deeper expectation—what Scripture calls “joy in the morning” (Psalm 30:5).

This is the paradox of the Christian life:
joy is not the absence of sorrow—it is the presence of hope within it.

And ultimately, that hope stretches beyond this life.

During this Easter we celebrate and embrace both the terrible passion of the cross where Christ paid the full price for our sins. Then three days later we have the joy and elation of His resurrection. Had He not resurrected, there would be no reason for joy or the hope within us.

The world teaches us to fear death as the end of everything good. Christianity does the opposite. It tells us that in Christ, death is not loss—it is fulfillment. The fullness of joy is not found in perfect circumstances here, but in complete restoration there.

That sounds extreme until you understand the foundation beneath it.

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” — Romans 6:23

We deserve judgment. That is the honest starting point. Our lives, measured against God’s standard, fall short. And yet right in the middle of that reality comes the gospel—hope breaking into failure, life interrupting death.

So we are told something that feels almost unreasonable:
we can be joyful—not because of what we see, but because of what has been promised.

I’ve been to enough funerals to know how unnatural that sounds.

Grief is real. Loss is heavy. It is hard—sometimes impossible—to feel joy when everyone around you is mourning. Christianity does not deny that. It doesn’t ask us to pretend.

But it does insist on something deeper:
that grief is not the final word.

Some days I feel more joyful than others. That fluctuation doesn’t mean the reason for joy has changed. It means I’m drifting—gripping tightly to temporary things and giving them more influence than they are due.

That’s the real tension.

We live in a world that constantly tells us what matters: success, control, comfort, recognition. When those things are threatened or lost, joy goes with them—if that’s where we’ve anchored it.

But faith reorders reality.

It reminds us that what we see is not ultimate. That our current lives—marked by temptation, frustration, and failure—are not the final version of our story. I feel the weight of my own shortcomings. I see the brokenness in others. Disappointment is not theoretical—it’s daily.

And yet, after all of that, faith speaks:

You are not stuck here.
You are not defined by this.
This is not the end.

That changes everything.

My daily experience often feels like a cycle—physical strain, emotional friction, mental fatigue, all tied to a fallen nature that doesn’t easily yield. Left to myself, I don’t rise above it. I sit in it.

But something interrupts that cycle.

A simple act of faith.
A word of gratitude.
A moment of surrender.

Not because I’ve fixed anything—but because I’ve handed it back to the One who can.

And in that moment—sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly—grace meets me. Not as theory, but as relief. Not as escape from reality, but as a deeper reality breaking into it.

I may not overcome suffering in my own strength. I may not eliminate failure. But by faith, I don’t have to carry them as final.

That’s where joy begins to take root.

But even here, we need to be precise: the joy we are given is not ultimately our own—it is His. Jesus did not call us to manufacture joy from within ourselves, but to enter into something that already exists in Him. “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11). This is not self-generated optimism; it is participation in the very joy of Christ. The same joy that carried Him through suffering—“who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross” (Hebrews 12:2)—is now given to those who abide in Him. And this joy is sustained not by circumstance, but by the Spirit of God within us, for “the fruit of the Spirit is…joy” (Galatians 5:22). Joy is not something we build; it is something we receive. Something we step into. Something we are filled with as we remain connected to Christ Himself.

Over time, something shifts.
You begin to expect joy—not because life gets easier, but because God proves faithful.

Again and again.
In weakness.
In failure.
In waiting.

“Though you have not seen him, you love him…you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory.” — 1 Peter 1:8

That’s the kind of joy worth pursuing.

Not fragile.
Not circumstantial.
Not temporary.

But anchored—firmly—in the unseen, unchanging promises of God.

And once you’ve tasted that, even in small ways, you stop chasing joy.

You start expecting it.

I attended a political luncheon this week supporting a Christian congressman. It was an informative event and a chance to meet thoughtful people from many walks of life.

At our table, we discussed how Christian principles might be reintegrated into our culture, courts, and legislature. During that conversation, someone repeated a familiar phrase:

“Some people are so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good.”

I’ve heard that saying before—but this time, it struck me differently.

If following Christ makes us irrelevant to the world, then something is off. God created this world for His purposes (Revelation 4:11). Why wouldn’t His people seek to influence it through truth, redemption, and restoration?

The Retreat from Engagement

I know many Christians who have chosen to disengage from “the world,” leaving governance entirely to secular leadership.

But that feels inconsistent with the calling of Christ.

We are not called to withdraw—we are called to bear witness (Acts 1:8).

For most of my life, I avoided politics. I saw it as a corrupt system—more about controlling people than serving them. And if we’re honest, much of it still looks that way. Too often, government appears driven by self-preservation rather than genuine representation.

When Politics Becomes Religion

We now live in a time of extreme political division.

Politics has, in many ways, become its own religion—complete with loyalty tests, moral absolutes, and hostility toward dissent. The result is a “divide and conquer” culture where compromise is weakness and opposition is enemy.

As ideas harden into extremes, unity feels nearly impossible.

A Mirror Inside the Church

What’s more concerning is this:

As politics has fractured, so has the Church.

Over centuries, Christianity has divided into countless denominations, doctrines, and interpretations—even disagreement over the core message of the Gospel itself. Too often, those differences are marked not by humility, but by disdain.

In many places, we’ve lost both the conviction and the love that should define us.

Jesus prayed for unity among His followers (John 17:20–21), yet we often reflect division more than oneness.

Faith Pushed to the Margins

The United States was founded with strong Judeo-Christian influences on morality and justice. But over time, secular humanism has challenged those foundations and pushed faith out of public life.

We’re told religion should stay at the doorstep—private, personal, and silent in matters of governance.

The result?

A culture increasingly unsure of what truth even is (Isaiah 5:20).

The Silent Majority

Here’s a reality worth confronting:

Roughly 40–50% of Christians do not vote in a typical election cycle.

Think about that.

If Christians were even modestly unified—not politically, but spiritually—their influence on culture would be undeniable. Not through domination, but through presence.

But unity in the faith has proven far more difficult than unity at the ballot box.

Beyond Political Identity

I’ve heard sincere Christians from both major parties say:

“I don’t see how a true Christian could belong to the other side.”

That mindset reveals the deeper issue.

There are not “liberal Christians” and “conservative Christians” in the truest sense—there is faith in Christ, which transcends political categories.

As Scripture reminds us, there is neither Jew nor Greek (Galatians 3:28)—nor Republican nor Democrat.

Those identities are human constructs.

Jesus would not fit neatly into any modern political party. But He would speak into all of them.

In the World, Not Of It

This leaves us with a tension we cannot escape:

• We are in the world, but not of it (John 17:14–16)

• We are called to be light (Matthew 5:14–16)

• We are meant to be salt—to preserve and transform (Matthew 5:13)

• We are to love all, but not affirm all (Ephesians 4:15)

• God is both love and justice (Psalm 89:14)

So where does that leave us politically?

A Call to Thoughtful Engagement

We are blessed to live in a country where we can vote.

Yes, sometimes it feels like choosing between imperfect options. Usually it is.

But disengagement is not neutrality—it is absence.

And absence has consequences.

If we choose not to vote, we still carry a responsibility to speak truth, to influence where we can, and to live as witnesses of a Kingdom that is not of this world—but is very much for it.

We are called to pray for and engage with those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1–2), not ignore them.

Where We Stand

No political party fully represents the values of Christ.

All are flawed. All are, in some way, shaped by power, self-interest, and human limitation.

That means our allegiance cannot ultimately belong to any party.

It must belong to truth.

Final Thought

Our role is not to win political arguments.

It is to live faithfully, speak truthfully, and influence whatever spaces we occupy—without losing our identity in the process.

Do good where you can (Galatians 6:9–10).
Refuse participation in what is evil (Romans 12:9).
Stand firm in the Gospel, regardless of political pressure (Philippians 1:27).

And wherever you find yourself—left, right, or somewhere in between—be a voice that calls people back to something higher.

Because if people of faith withdraw completely, we shouldn’t be surprised at what fills the vacuum.

Many Christians debate prophecy.

Was most of it fulfilled in the first century?
Or is the greatest fulfillment still ahead of us?

The debate between preterists and futurists can become complicated quickly. Scholars argue over timelines, historical events, and interpretations of prophetic passages.

Modern day “prophets” often prophesy with total disregard of the scriptures. Many of them would have been stoned in the Old Testament times.

But beneath these various debates lies a much simpler question:

Where is your hope?

I place my hope in the future because of what Jesus did in the past.

And that is exactly what Christian faith was always meant to do.

Hope Rooted in History

Christianity does not begin with philosophy or speculation.
It begins with events.

Jesus came into the world.
Jesus was crucified.
Jesus rose from the dead.

Paul understood how central those events were:

“If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:17

The resurrection is not merely a comforting story. It is the foundation of Christian faith.

But the resurrection also points beyond itself.

It is not just proof that something extraordinary happened once in the past.

It is proof that something extraordinary is still coming.

Paul calls Christ the “firstfruits” of the resurrection:

“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:20

Firstfruits means the harvest has begun.

But the full harvest is still ahead.

Faith Always Looks Forward

Faith remembers the past, but it always leans toward the future.

Hebrews defines faith this way:

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
— Hebrews 11:1

Faith is confidence in God based on what He has already done.

Hope is the expectation that He will finish what He started.

The early Christians did not merely celebrate the resurrection as a completed story.

They saw it as the beginning of a future reality.

Why the Early Church Was Both Preterist and Futurist

The earliest Christians actually held something that sounds contradictory today.

They believed some prophecies had already been fulfilled, while others were still ahead.

Jesus Himself spoke of events that would occur within that generation:

“Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.”
— Matthew 24:34

Many scholars believe that passage refers to the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70.

In that sense, certain prophecies were fulfilled in history.

But the apostles also spoke clearly of future events.

Paul wrote:

“For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout… and the dead in Christ will rise.”
— 1 Thessalonians 4:16

Peter described the ultimate hope this way:

“But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.”
— 2 Peter 3:13

John saw the same promise in his vision:

“Behold, I am making all things new.”
— Revelation 21:5

Some prophecy was fulfilled.

But the great promises of restoration were still coming.

The Kingdom: Already… But Not Yet

Jesus Himself explained this tension.

The Kingdom of God is already present, but not yet complete.

When Jesus began His ministry He announced:

“The kingdom of God has come near.”
— Mark 1:15

Through His miracles, teaching, and authority over evil, the Kingdom was already breaking into the world.

Yet Jesus also taught His followers to pray:

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
— Matthew 6:10

If the Kingdom had fully arrived, there would be no reason to pray for it to come.

The apostles continued this same understanding.

Paul wrote that believers have already been brought into Christ’s kingdom:

“He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.”
— Colossians 1:13

And yet he also spoke of a kingdom still to be inherited:

“Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:50

The Kingdom has begun.

But its full glory is still ahead.

Living Between Two Worlds

This is why the Christian life often feels like living between two realities.

We have already been redeemed.

But creation itself is still waiting to be restored.

Paul describes this tension beautifully:

“We ourselves… groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.”
— Romans 8:23

The resurrection of Jesus began the renewal of creation.

But the completion of that renewal still lies ahead.

A Faith Without a Future

If the future is removed from Christianity, something essential disappears.

What remains might be a philosophy.
Or a moral system.
Or a historical tradition.

But it is no longer living faith.

The New Testament constantly points believers toward the future.

“We wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.”
— Titus 2:13

“Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there.”
— Philippians 3:20

Christianity is not only about what God has done.

It is about what God will still do.

The Past Proves the Future

This is why my hope is still in the future.

Not because I ignore the past.

But because of it.

The cross proves God’s love.

The resurrection proves His power.

And those two events together guarantee something extraordinary:

God is not finished with history.

As the angels told the disciples when Jesus ascended:

“This same Jesus… will come back in the same way you have seen him go.”
— Acts 1:11

Christian faith therefore holds three truths together.

God acted in the past.
God works in the present.
God will complete His promises in the future.

The Purpose of Faith

Faith looks back to what God has done.

Hope trusts what God will still do.

And because of that truth:

Those who have faith
still have a future.

Knowledge itself is grounded in truth. Yet truth, as we encounter it in history, is not always complete or fully understood in the moment. What we know today may later be expanded by further revelation.

This is where prophecy enters the picture.

Prophecy does not divert history; it directs it. God declares the end from the beginning, revealing that history itself moves toward a purposeful future.

“Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done.” — Book of Isaiah 46:10

Prophecy is not mystical guesswork. It is the natural conclusion of God’s wisdom being revealed. When God speaks truth, the future unfolds according to the cause and effect of His word.

History matters to God because His word governs it.

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” — Gospel of Matthew 24:35

Because God’s word is true, history becomes the evidence of that truth. Every fulfilled promise strengthens the foundation on which faith stands.

Faith built only on feelings is shallow and unreliable.

Emotions may accompany faith, but they cannot define it. Feelings rise and fall, but truth remains. Our experiences may stir emotion, but it is the experience of truth that should shape those emotions—not the other way around.

The Apostle Paul reminds believers that faith is grounded in something solid:

“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” — Epistle to the Romans 10:17

This means faith is not merely emotional enthusiasm or mysticism. It is confidence built on what God has revealed.

Often we know something is true even when we cannot yet explain every “why.” History provides the facts, while the purposes behind those events may unfold slowly over time.

Even the disciples lived this reality. They witnessed events they did not fully understand until later revelation made the meaning clear.

Faith therefore rests on what has already been proven.

God has spoken.
God has acted.
God has fulfilled His promises.

Because of this, we trust Him even when the future remains unclear.

Faith is not trusting our understanding of the future.
Faith is trusting the One who holds it.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” — Epistle to the Hebrews 11:1

Emotions may move us when truth is revealed, and for that we can be thankful. But the real evidence of faith is not emotion—it is obedience.

Truth produces transformation.

Actions reveal belief.

So we thank God for the emotions that sometimes accompany revelation. But we thank Him far more for the truth itself, and for the knowledge that our faith rests on something far deeper than feelings.

It rests on the word of God, proven through history and fulfilled in His promises.

In the previous essay, Chosen, Adopted, and Called to Reign, we explored the remarkable promise that believers are adopted into the household of God. Through Christ we become heirs—sons and daughters called to share in His coming Kingdom.

But Scripture also gives a sober warning.

Not everyone who appears to belong to the family truly does.

Some pretend.

Some imitate.

Some attempt to claim an inheritance that was never truly theirs.

Jesus Himself warned that false disciples and false teachers would appear among the people of God.

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven.”
— Matthew 7:21

Throughout history there have been those who want the privileges of the Kingdom without the transformation of the heart.

The Mr. Ripley Syndrome

While traveling recently I rewatched the film The Talented Mr. Ripley, and the story struck me as a powerful metaphor for this spiritual reality.

The film follows Tom Ripley, a struggling young man who becomes fascinated with the life of a wealthy playboy named Dickie Greenleaf. Ripley envies Dickie’s wealth, freedom, and status. He studies him carefully, imitates him, and slowly inserts himself into his life.

But admiration soon turns into obsession.

Ripley begins lying, manipulating, and eventually murdering in order to take Dickie’s place. He learns to mimic Dickie’s voice, his behavior, and even his identity.

Yet no matter how convincing the imitation becomes, Ripley can never truly become the man he is pretending to be.

His entire life becomes a performance built on deception.

And the cost of living that lie eventually destroys him.

Spiritual Impostors

In the spiritual world, similar dramas have unfolded since the beginning.

Scripture tells us that evil itself began with envy. Lucifer, described as a beautiful and powerful angel, rebelled against God in an attempt to elevate himself to God’s position.

Instead of becoming like God, he fell.

Since that rebellion, the conflict between truth and deception has played out throughout human history.

The first human family experienced it when Cain murdered his brother Abel out of jealousy. Throughout Scripture we see the same struggle: pride, envy, and the desire to claim authority that does not belong to us.

The Kingdom of God has always faced another danger as well—pretenders.

People who imitate righteousness but do not possess it.

The New Testament warns repeatedly that false teachers would appear within the church itself.

They may sound convincing.
They may appear spiritual.
They may even gain influence.

But beneath the surface they do not truly know the King.

When Deception Enters the Church

Like Tom Ripley, spiritual impostors often begin by carefully studying the people they wish to imitate.

They learn the language of faith.

They learn how to preach, teach, or lead.

They understand how to appeal to human desires—wealth, power, status, or special knowledge.

The apostle Paul warned that such people would eventually arise:

“For the time will come when people will not endure sound doctrine… but will gather teachers who tell them what their itching ears want to hear.”
— 2 Timothy 4:3

These leaders may promise prosperity, spiritual superiority, or secret knowledge.

But their influence ultimately pulls people away from the simplicity of the gospel.

Just as Lucifer twisted truth in the Garden of Eden, false teachers often distort God’s word until it becomes almost unrecognizable.

Their goal is not to serve the King.

It is to build their own kingdom.

The Cost of Living a Lie

One of the most haunting aspects of The Talented Mr. Ripley is the loneliness of Tom Ripley’s life.

Even when he appears successful, he lives in constant fear of exposure.

He cannot experience genuine love or belonging because his entire identity is built on deception.

The same is true spiritually.

A person can imitate faith for a time, but eventually the truth is revealed.

Jesus warned:

“Nothing is hidden that will not be made known.”
— Luke 12:2

Those who pretend to belong to God’s household while rejecting His authority ultimately discover that they have no inheritance in the Kingdom.

The True Mark of God’s Children

Scripture gives a simple test for recognizing genuine members of God’s family.

True believers are not perfect, but they are transformed.

The Holy Spirit begins shaping their lives to resemble Christ.

“Those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.”
— Romans 8:29

The mark of belonging is not outward performance but obedience and love for the King.

Those who truly belong to God’s household follow their elder brother, Jesus.

They grow in humility.

They serve others.

They seek truth rather than power.

Guarding the Household of Faith

There have always been prodigal sons who wander from the Father’s house.

But there have also been impostors who attempt to infiltrate it.

Like Tom Ripley, they imitate what they admire but do not truly possess.

Scripture urges believers to remain rooted in the teachings of Christ so they are not deceived.

“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit.”
— Colossians 2:8

When a teacher or leader begins presenting a “new gospel,” a new authority, or a new path to God, the safest response is to return to the clear teachings of Jesus.

There is only one way into the family of God.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
— John 14:6

The Kingdom That Is Coming

The promise given to believers is extraordinary.

Those who have been redeemed, forgiven, and truly adopted into God’s household will inherit the Kingdom Christ is preparing.

But that inheritance belongs only to those who genuinely belong to the King.

Pretenders cannot inherit what they never truly received.

The invitation remains open to all who will come in repentance and faith.

But the Kingdom of God is not built on imitation.

It is built on transformation.

And those who truly belong to the King will one day reign with Him in the Kingdom that is coming.

Part 1 of a Two-Part Series

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.”
— Romans 8:16–17

One of the most remarkable truths of the Christian faith is that salvation does not simply forgive our sins—it changes our identity.

When we come to recognize our sin and God’s provision through Jesus Christ for its payment and pardon, something profound happens. We are redeemed and brought out of our old life into something entirely new.

We are adopted into the household of God.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”
— Ephesians 2:8

Faith itself is a gift.

The King chooses His adopted children, and those children eventually recognize that He has been calling them all along.

The bloodline of this royal family is not biological.
It is a bloodline of faith.

Jesus Himself said:

“Many are called, but few are chosen.”
— Matthew 22:14

Yet the invitation remains open:

“Whoever comes to Me I will never cast out.”
— John 6:37

If the King declares it, it is so.

Adoption Into the Royal Line

The story of this royal household begins with a promise.

God promised Abraham that through his descendants the nations of the earth would be blessed. That promise continued through the royal line of King David and was ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

Through Christ, believers are grafted into that family.

The New Testament does not say Gentiles replace Israel. Instead, we are described as branches grafted into the same living tree.

“If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.”
— Galatians 3:29

Because of this, believers are not merely forgiven sinners.

They are heirs.

Scripture makes this astonishing claim:

“If children, then heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.”
— Romans 8:17

We are adopted into the royal household of God and promised that one day we will rule and reign with Christ.

The Responsibility of the Chosen

Those who are redeemed are not saved merely to exist.

They are born again to serve and to reflect the grace of the King.

Peter describes believers this way:

“You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people.”
— 1 Peter 2:9

With inheritance comes responsibility.

The Kingdom of God is not about status or prestige. It is about humility, service, and obedience to the King.

Yet many who are called shrink back from their calling.

Some grow jealous of those with greater gifts. Others resent their place in the family. Still others abandon their inheritance entirely, believing the secular world offers something better.

In that sense, the drama of faith sometimes resembles the struggles within earthly royal families.

Consider the modern example of Prince Harry of the British royal family. By many accounts he struggled with his place within the monarchy and eventually distanced himself from its responsibilities. He no longer enjoys the full benefits of his birthright.

Something similar happens in the household of God.

Many believers lose sight of who they are and drift away from their calling because of resentment, bitterness, or disappointment.

They forget that their inheritance was never about earthly recognition.

This World Is Not Yet the Kingdom

The world we live in today is not yet the Kingdom Christ is establishing.

There is little lasting glory here. No permanent throne. No crown that endures.

Those things belong to the Kingdom that is coming.

“Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
— Revelation 2:10

Believers are heirs of that coming Kingdom.

Jesus stands first in authority under the Father, and astonishingly, those who belong to Him are promised a place in His reign.

“If we endure, we will also reign with Him.”
— 2 Timothy 2:12

Heaven is not portrayed in Scripture as a place where redeemed people grow wings and spend eternity playing harps. That imagery comes largely from pagan folklore and art.

The biblical picture is far more profound.

Heaven is a Kingdom.
And the redeemed are part of the King’s household.

It is a place of relationship, purpose, and shared rule under Christ.

Do Not Throw Away Your Crown

The tragedy is that many people reject this inheritance.

Some refuse the call entirely.

Others accept it for a time but later walk away, trading their birthright for the temporary comforts of the world.

Like the prodigal son, they exchange the wealth of the Father’s house for the illusion of freedom.

Yet the responsibility of those who remain is clear.

“To whom much is given, much will be required.”
— Luke 12:48

Members of God’s royal household are called to:

• lift up others

• intercede for others

• care for others

• reconcile people back to the King

Faith was never meant to be an isolated experience.

The family of God exists to invite others into the Kingdom.

Living as Sons and Daughters of the King

Believers are not spiritual paupers.

They are sons and daughters of the King—members of a royal household established by the grace of God through Jesus Christ.

Yet the royalty of God’s Kingdom looks very different from worldly power. It is expressed through humility, service, obedience, and love.

One day the Kingdom will be fully revealed, and those who remain faithful will share in Christ’s reign.

Until that day, we live as heirs in training.

The tragedy of the world is not that the Kingdom of God is small, but that many people never recognize the inheritance offered to them.

Some reject the invitation.
Others trade their crown for temporary comforts.

But for those who hear the call of the King, the promise still stands.

The door of the household is open.

The inheritance is real.

The crown awaits those who remain faithful.

May we live each day remembering who we truly are—
sons and daughters of the King.

I am developing a book concept titled Fatherless Generations. It traces a painful pattern that stretches all the way back to Adam: men who shrink from the spiritual leadership God entrusted to them.

In the garden, Adam did not protect or guide. When confronted by God, he shifted the blame: “The woman you gave me…” (Genesis 3:12). Instead of standing in obedience, he abdicated. That pattern—avoidance, passivity, blame—has echoed through generations ever since that great fall of man.

I know this story personally.

My father abandoned our family when I was very young. My grandfather stepped in and became a stabilizing force in my childhood. My mother—devout, hardworking, and faithful—became the first single parent in our neighborhood and carried the weight of our home. Church attendance did not shield us from the consequences of failed male leadership. Faith was present, but fatherhood was fractured.

That fracture leaves marks.

Over time I’ve realized something uncomfortable: my struggles with authority did not begin in adulthood. They began in childhood. When the earthly father relationship is broken, it becomes easier to project that brokenness onto God. If a father disappears, disappoints, or fails to lead, it is not hard to imagine a distant or unreliable Heavenly Father or carry hurt and insecurity that weakens the soul.

And that distortion can quietly shape a life.

For years, I wandered spiritually. I lived like a prodigal—not necessarily in outward rebellion, but in inward independence. I questioned authority. I resisted submission. I trusted my own instincts over God’s commands. Even now, I must consciously resist the impulse to run from accountability or dis-trusting leaders.

Sin often travels generationally—not just in behavior, but in posture. We inherit attitudes as much as actions.

I have met many prodigal sons and daughters who carry similar wounds. Their struggle with God is often entangled with their struggle with human authority. It is one of the enemy’s oldest strategies: to make us see God through the lens of our most painful earthly relationships.

If our fathers were absent, we imagine God is absent.
If our fathers were harsh, we imagine God is harsh.
If our fathers were unreliable, we imagine God is unreliable.

But God is not the magnified version of our earthly fathers. He is their holy standard.

The parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11–32) reveals a Father who does not abandon, manipulate, or shame. He waits. He watches. He runs toward the returning child. He restores dignity before demanding explanation.

The son rehearsed a speech of unworthiness.
The Father responded with embrace.

This is the difference between human authority and divine authority. Human authority often protects itself. Godly authority sacrifices itself.

Romans 5:8 tells us, “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Before we came home, the Father had already made provision. Jesus, the faithful Son, entered our rebellion and absorbed its consequence. He did not simply point the way home—He became the way (John 14:6). He intercedes for us. He restores us.

The cycle of fatherlessness can end—not because men suddenly become perfect, but because God is.

If you are a prodigal son or daughter, your story is not finished. Your independence may feel strong, but your soul still longs for belonging. Beneath the resistance, there is often exhaustion. Beneath the anger, grief. Beneath the self-reliance, loneliness.

Coming home begins with repentance—not self-hatred, but surrender. It is laying down the narrative that you must protect, define, and save yourself. It is trusting that God’s authority is not oppressive, but life-giving. It comes down to laying down your ways and accepting His.

The Father has not abandoned you.
The Son has already paid your debt.
The Spirit is still drawing you.

You were not created for isolation. You were created for sonship and daughterhood.

Come home! He is calling you.

We are living in genuinely perplexing and increasingly disorienting times when it comes to law and order.

Man’s laws were originally designed to restrain evil and protect human dignity (Romans 13:1–4). Today, however, they often appear as instruments of control, contradiction, and moral confusion.

America’s Constitution—once the bold foundation of the world’s first large-scale experiment in republican self-government—now shows visible decline. We have laws that contradict one another, rules enforced selectively, and justice that bends under political pressure. What was once rooted in broadly shared moral assumptions now shifts with cultural winds.

We imagine morality can be legislated into existence. Yet Scripture reminds us that the law exposes sin but cannot transform the heart (Romans 3:20). The harder governments press through regulation and coercion, the more defiantly people resist. Control has never produced virtue.

Tax codes claim fairness while burdening the productive center of society. Equality is loudly proclaimed yet unevenly applied. Justice is debated endlessly, but rarely practiced impartially.

Laws once centered on clear moral boundaries—murder, theft, truthful witness—reflecting commandments such as “You shall not murder” and “You shall not bear false witness” (Exodus 20:13,16)—now dissolve into moral relativism. Theft is excused as necessity. False witness and slander spread freely in politics and business. Justice becomes less about truth and more about narrative power.

We see stark contradictions. Unborn children are legally destroyed, while debates rage about dignity at the end of life. Parents are increasingly sidelined in moral formation, while institutions assume authority over identity and conscience. Isaiah’s ancient warning echoes loudly: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil” (Isaiah 5:20).

Those who still hold to the moral law of a holy God are often dismissed as outdated or intolerant. Secularism expands while biblical faith recedes from public influence. The divide between biblical and secular worldviews widens daily.

For all the pride of our age, humility is rare. Truth is negotiable. Honesty is optional. Yet Scripture tells us plainly: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).

But there is another law.

There is a higher law that does not shift with elections or opinion polls. God’s Word contains what humanity truly needs. The law given in Scripture was never arbitrary control—it was merciful boundary and moral clarity (Psalm 19:7–11).

Even God’s covenant people repeatedly rejected His ways, and history records the consequences. What we see globally today is not new; it is the fruit of humanity choosing autonomy over obedience. Disobedience always carries cost (Galatians 6:7).

No empire, ideology, or political structure has ever secured lasting peace. Jesus Himself said, “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36). When humanity believes it can engineer utopia apart from God, collapse eventually follows.

Meanwhile, manipulation and unseen spiritual forces shape our age. As Paul wrote, “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers… against the spiritual forces of evil” (Ephesians 6:12).

So what is a Christian to do?

The Gospel calls us higher:

• We belong to an eternal kingdom (Philippians 3:20).

• By grace we are saved, not by law-keeping (Ephesians 2:8–9).

• The Spirit empowers us to live differently in a crooked generation (Philippians 2:15).

• We love justice but entrust its final fulfillment to God (Micah 6:8; Romans 12:19).

• Our righteousness is found in Christ, not in cultural victories (2 Corinthians 5:21).

God’s law does not enslave—it liberates. “The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul” (Psalm 19:7). He does not seek robotic compliance, but transformed hearts.

Jesus did not demand fairness. He endured injustice to open the way into a kingdom that cannot be shaken (Hebrews 12:28).

So even as corruption grows and moral confusion deepens, we are not without hope. A day is coming when all that is false will be exposed, when justice will be perfect, and when righteousness will dwell forever (2 Peter 3:13).

Until then, we live quietly, courageously, faithfully—trusting not in fragile systems, but in the unchanging character of God.

My life in the church has often included calls for “revival.” We say we want spiritual revival — but too often we quietly equate the spiritual with the emotional.

The soul and spirit are far more than feelings. Emotion is part of us, but it is not the foundation of faith.

Recent reports of campus revivals — at Asbury University in Kentucky and Southeastern University in Florida — have stirred both celebration and skepticism. Watching the commentary unfold has prompted me to reflect on what real revival truly is.

Emotion Is Not the Essence of the Spiritual

The spiritual life can produce emotion. Joy, conviction, gratitude, tears — these are natural responses to truth.

But emotion is not the anchor of faith.

If faith were built on emotion, we would drift in and out of belief many times a day. Our feelings fluctuate. God does not.

“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17)

Faith rests on the truth of God’s Word and covenant promises — not on a passing sense of “feeling His presence.” God is present whether we feel Him or not (Psalm 139:7). His Spirit indwells His people (1 Corinthians 6:19). Sometimes His nearness is sensed; sometimes His hand is hidden. But He remains constant.

“The wind blows where it wishes… you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes” (John 3:8). We may not see the Spirit — but we see the effects.

Revival Requires a Change of Will

Beyond emotional response, revival requires repentance.

Repentance is not enthusiasm. It is a change of mind that produces a change of direction. It bends the will toward God.

Revival should not be measured by how intense a gathering becomes, but by long-term transformation:

• Changed habits

• Renewed priorities

• Deepened obedience

• Growing humility

• Enduring love for truth

Temporary excitement is not revival. Sustained obedience is.

Rooted, Built Up, and Bearing Fruit

Scripture describes authentic spiritual growth in terms of depth, not spectacle:

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith…” (Colossians 2:6–7)

Notice the language — rooted. Growth that lasts begins beneath the surface.

True revival is not about outward appearance or emotional intensity alone. Tears may fall. Hearts may be stirred. But if those tears do not reach down into the roots of who we are — our identity, our will, our habits, our loves — then little lasting change occurs.

There are many high-profile Christian influencers today drawing attention to themselves and their “ministries” based on false gospels and pretenses of “revival” or “new ideas”. Don’t fall for false prophets, teachers, or shallow emotional appeals…musically or otherwise.

Genuine revival penetrates the inner life. It conforms the believer more fully to Christ. Christians intertwine their roots together centered around the “Tree of Life”.

And if it is real, it will eventually show up above ground.

A healthy tree reveals its strength in its fruit. In the same way, a revived heart reveals itself in daily faithfulness, integrity, self-control, and love in the real world.

Paul describes the fruit of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). These are not momentary experiences. They are cultivated character.

Jesus warned of trees full of leaves but lacking fruit (Matthew 21:18–19). Appearance alone is not evidence of life. Revival produces fruit.

Time tells the truth.

Faith Is Not Omniscience

Faith does not mean knowing everything. If we fully understood all things, faith would not be necessary.

“Now we see in a mirror dimly…” (1 Corinthians 13:12).

Every preacher, every teacher — no matter how confident — has limits. We all have feet of clay.

Faith means acting on what God has revealed, even while acknowledging what we do not yet understand.

Emotion is a gift. But it is not a compass.

The Test of Revival

When I see videos of young people singing, celebrating, and expressing joy, I am not cynical. I am grateful. God created emotion, and it is right to rejoice in Him.

But the true measure of revival will not be found in the intensity of a moment.

It will be seen years later.

Are they still walking with Christ?
Are they more humble?
More obedient?
More anchored in truth?
More like Jesus?

Real revival is not proven in a sanctuary.
It is proven in a life.

Sustainable revival is not built on intensity. It is built on truth, repentance, rootedness, and perseverance.

Emotion may ignite a spark.

But only truth-rooted obedience keeps the fire burning.
